A graduate of UCNW Bangor.  He became a Welsh teacher and head of department at Mold Alun School.  In 1980 he joined HTV in Cardiff as a journalist and presenter.  He moved to Caernarfon in 1982 to work in the independent television sector with Nant Films – one of the major independent companies.  A company director – he worked as a television director, producer and author on many of S4C’s greatest successes.

In 1992 he was elected as a councillor on the Arfon Borough Council and became leader of Gwynedd Council from 1996 - 2003. Elected to the National Assembly of Wales in 2003 he became Chair of the Environment, Planning and Countryside committee, and in 2006 he was chosen as Plaid’s Economic Development spokesperson.

He is especially interested in community regeneration and has been Chair of Antur Nantlle, a local regeneration company (in the old slate quarrying area of Arfon) since 1992.  Antur Nantlle is a past winner of the Wales best community based company award.  He is also Chairman of Nantlle Vale Football Club.
